The life
Annie Besant was an English socialist, theosophist, freemason, writer, orator, women's rights activist and educationist. She became involved in secularism, socialism, labour activism, birth control advocacy, theosophy, and Indian nationalism.
After separating from her husband, Besant became a prominent freethought speaker and collaborator of Charles Bradlaugh. She later joined the Theosophical Society, moved into Indian public life, and supported Irish and Indian self-rule.
Besant founded or led institutions and publications connected with the Home Rule movement, education and theosophy, and became the first woman to preside over the Indian National Congress in 1917.
