Panchang Elements
Tithis, Yogas & Karanas
The Panchang (Vedic calendar) tracks five elements daily: Tithi (lunar day), Nakshatra (lunar mansion), Yoga (planetary combination), Karana (half-tithi), and Vara (day of week). These determine the quality of each day.
Tithis (Lunar Days)
The 15 Lunar Phases of Vedic Calendar
A Tithi is a lunar day, representing the angular relationship between the Sun and Moon. There are 15 tithis in each paksha (fortnight), making 30 tithis in a complete lunar month. Each tithi carries unique energy for different activities.
Yogas (Planetary Combinations)
The 27 Yogas of Vedic Panchang
Yoga in the Panchang context refers to the sum of the longitudes of the Sun and Moon divided into 27 equal parts. Each Yoga carries distinct energy that influences the quality of time for various activities.
Karanas (Half-Tithis)
The 11 Karanas of Vedic Calendar
A Karana is half of a Tithi. There are 11 Karanas — 4 fixed and 7 recurring. Each Karana spans approximately 6 hours and indicates the nature of activities best suited for that period.
