Elinor Ostrom was an American political scientist and political economist associated with new institutional economics and political economy.
Her work examined common-pool resources, collective action and governance beyond simple state-versus-market models.
In 2009 she shared the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences with Oliver E. Williamson and became the first woman to receive that prize.
